Bio-luminescent algae – update

10 gallons of glowing algae

I have grown these guys for a couple of months now. They came to me in a 500ml flask, and now they occupy a 10 gallon aquarium. When diluted with fresh growth medium the multiply very fast. I’ve got to find a place to put the 30 gallon tank, I think its 30, and move them …

Restoring gel-coat on a boat

1986 Glastron x-19

I haven’t done much lately, but what project time I have had has gone to our boat, its a 1986 Glastron X-19. When I got it it had been setting out in the weather for quite some time and the gel-coat looked horrible, and felt like sand paper. So I spent some time wet-sanding and …

test MathML

$ C_1×V_1=C_2×V_2 $ Awesome it works. I just found something that makes entering equations much easier. I have a USB Bamboo Pen tablet and Windows 7 includes a math input panel. Windows recognizes handwritten equations and converts them to MathML. MathML stands for Math Markup Language. WordPress doesn’t support MathML natively, but there is a plugin WP-Math-2. I write the equation with …

Google Sketchup

that's a rover I'm designing ... stay tuned

Just thought I’d take a minute to talk about one of the tools I use frequently. Sketchup is a CAD program made by Google. It’s great for … sketching up ideas, I use it almost exclusively. It has a much lower learning curve than most other CAD programs, and once you get acquainted with the controls …

Fixing 3D printer with itself

Ultimaker, C Back, repair, 3d printer, 3d printed

There are these wooden pieces that clamp the drive belt to the gantry, and add tension. Well one of them broke. It held together just long enough to print out a replacement. This is the machine equivalent of growing a replacement kidney before yours fails. I got the calipers out, took some measurements and drew the part …

bioluminescent algae

!!!VIDEO!!!   pyrocystis fusiformis is a bioluminescent algae, a dinoflagellate to be specific. They emit blue-green light  when disturbed ie. the wake of ships, waves breaking on the shore, or when something moves in the water. It is thought the reason they do this is to attract secondary predators, something to eat what is eating them. They are found in many …
